January: Magick Meets Mundane

Published on 9 January 2025 at 03:36

Early this morning I was sitting at the kitchen table, sorting my tasks for the day. The snow gently falling outside the window to my left. A cold, snowy day in January. The bright and festive feel of the holidays behind us. It can be a challenge to keep the magick alive during these cold, dark months.

So, let's explore the everyday little things we can do to keep the magick flowing all year long.

The deep winter is considered in most cultures to be a time of rest. With that being said, there is a good chance there are no huge rituals on the horizon for you. Greeting the full moon "sky-clad" on a bitter cold January night doesn't sound too appealing. So, what to do?

I make a point every morning to ground. I take a few quiet moments before my children wake to meditate and quiet my mind. Thinking of it in terms of a story, each day is a fresh page.

Speaking of pages...

If my sleep was dreamed filled or restless I do a quick journal entry. It is good to Journal to help with later reflection, as dreams can be a window to underlying stressors, uncertainty, as well as hopes, and intuition.

When preparing my morning coffee or tea, I make a point of putting my intentions for the day into it. This can be as simple as, thinking about the tasks for the day and the outcome you would like to have while stirring in your sweetener (clockwise to draw in the positive energy). As you sip, keep those intentions in the forefront of your mind. This can also work for all the kitchen witches out there! Prepare dishes that include ingredients that correspond with your intentions.

Do you enjoy color magick? This is another simple way to practice; Paint your nails to match your intentions. Looking for a mental boost? Try a fun Blue or Yellow to promote positive change, optimism, and hope. Looking for some positive financial change? Try gold or green. Same applies for clothing. Got a big interview or presentation coming up? coordinate your outfit accessories to match your intentions.

Start an indoor herb garden. Not only are you cultivating key ingredients for your practice, but you are also planting seeds (no pun intended) to remember that brighter, warmer days are just around the corner. Mint, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, and Sage are great choices and valuable in culinary and magickal pursuits.
Snow days got you down? Cabin fever setting in? Pick up a hobby such as crochet or knitting. This is knot magick in its most basic form. Not only have you learned a new skill, you are also learning patience, and honing your intention setting ability.

Take any down time to study. Winter for some of us tends to be less busy that the hustle and bustle of Spring and Summer, and the insanity that is the Holidays. January just seems quieter. It's a great time to pick up that book on that new subject you've been wanting to research. Personally, I am diving into my Celtic roots. Learning about cultures and traditions my ancestors held dear to them helps me build a connection with my inner self and brings an understanding on where I came from.

These are just a few ideas to keep up your practice in the colder months. Remember that; Will, Belief, and Intent are the heart of all magickal workings. keeping a positive outlook and setting goals and intentions will help you get through the gloomy days.

Have a Blessed Day!
